The cultivation of the vines is located on the “La Costa” hill which overlooks the town of Pontremoli, and comprises approximately 5 hectares of vineyards.
The Farm has a South-South West exposure, on a predominantly terraced hill and the soil composition consits of a strong stony texture and stone, which allows the grapes to reach perfect ripeness.
The project was brought to life in 1994 to bring to light the many varieties of vines present in Lunigiana. The team spearheaded by professor Giancarlo Scalabrelli of the Faculty of Agriculture (Pisa University) conducted an extensive research campaign on the farms located in the area, which made it possible to identify aproximately 188 varieties of vines. The most significant discovery, which comprises 60 of these varieties, of which about 25 are indigenous, were planted in Campo di Teglia, a piece of land covering approximately one hectare that lies within the grounds of Villa Pavesi Ruschi. This was done so that the scientific community could study the impact on purity and kick-start micro-vinification experiments, in order to establish whether these vines were suitable to be reintegrated in the cultivation.
Fastforward twenty years and scientific obsolescence brought the above described research activities to a halt, threatening in the process the loss of these grape varieties that had been planted in the “Il Vigneto Collezione” for good. To avoid facing this possibility Massa Carrara Province begun funding and launched a new widespread vineyard project coordinated by the University of Pisa, thanks to which the native vines of the ” Il Vigneto Collezione” will be utilised by the wine makers present in the Province.
